The Governor’s Arts Awards were established in 1971 to recognize
those individuals and organizations that have made significant
contributions to the cultural life of Tennessee. These awards
are Tennessee’s highest honor in the arts, recognizing the
outstanding contributions of artists, arts organizations,
volunteers, schools, educators, local governments, legislators
and corporate citizens in the state or nationally. The 2009
awards will be represented in Nashville at the War Memorial
Building on April 14th during a ceremony produced by
the Tennessee Arts Commission.
AWARD CATEGORIES
FOLKLIFE HERITAGE AWARD
To recognize folk artists or organizations that have made
outstanding contributions to artistic tradition. The award is
intended to honor long term achievements within art forms that
are rooted in the traditional or ethnic culture of Tennessee.
ARTS LEADERSHIP AWARD
To recognize organizations, businesses, educators, patrons, arts
administrators, corporations and volunteers that have
demonstrated significant support or participation in activities
which foster excellence in, appreciation of or access to the
arts throughout the State of Tennessee.
DISTINGUISHED ARTIST AWARD
To recognize Tennessee artists of exception talent and
creativity, in any discipline, that over the course of a career
have contributed to the arts and have helped guide and influence
directions, trends and aesthetic practices on a state and
national level.
