Deadline nears for
Governor's Schools
High school students wanting a head start on college before 12th
grade may want to compete for scholarships to attend one of
Tennessee's Governor's Schools. The state of Tennessee provides
12 summer programs for gifted and talented high school students.
The students selected will earn 6 college credit hours (about
two semester classes) and room and board for five weeks at 12
colleges throughout the state next summer. Each Governor's
School focuses on different instruction.
Students who want to attend one of the Governor's Schools can
download an application on the state's Department of Education
Web site:
www.state.tn.us/education/govschools. The deadline for
Governor's School for the Arts at MTSU is Thursday, but the
other 11 schools have a Nov. 30 deadline. Students applying
should work with school counselors, who can advise them on the
written application as well as pursuing teacher recommendations.
These programs provide challenging and intensive learning
experiences in the following disciplines: arts, humanities,
international studies, engineering, science, prospective
teachers, scientific exploration of Tennessee heritage,
information technology leadership and agricultural science.
Three new programs beginning in 2008 are computational physics,
emerging technologies and scientific models and data analysis.
