2007 Governor’s Schools Seeking Applicants
Nashville, TN-
The deadline is approaching for high school students to apply
for one of nine Tennessee Governor’s Schools where they may earn
six hours tuition-free college credit this summer. Governor’s
school applications, due December 1, are available online at .
The schools offer five-week programs in agricultural sciences,
performing arts, engineering,
humanities, information technology leadership, international
studies, education, sciences and Tennessee heritage.
“I can
personally attest to how remarkable a university study
experience can be to a high school student,” Governor Phil
Bredesen said. “In addition to getting a head start on college,
students get a taste of higher education and the excitement of
digging deeper into a subject they love.”
Governor’s schools are open to high schools planning to continue
their education after high school. Various Tennessee colleges
and universities will host each Governor’s school program
throughout the summer season. The 2007 schedule is as follows:

“Governor Bredesen has led the charge to increase the rigor,
length and value of these programs to provide the greatest
benefit to students,” Education Commissioner Lana Seivers said.
“Roughly 650 students took advantage of this incredible
opportunity last year and we want every interested student to
know these programs exist for them.”
Tennessee first offered Governor’s schools in 1985. Governor
Bredesen reinstated and expanded Governor’s schools in 2003,
also providing college credit for the first time in the history
of the program. For more information, contact Rachel Woods at
